The Melissa Virus was a virus that originated from a programmer named David Lee Smith, who hijacked an America Online (AOL) account to post a file on an internet newsgroup namely "alt.sex". The file itself promised multiple free passwords to access a fee-based website with adult contents. With the bait being successful, many users downloaded the file and opening it with Microsoft Word enabled the virus to activate and spread. This caused an estimated amount of $80 million for the cleanup and repair of the affected computer systems.
